Welcome!
I just returned from my second Advanced Clinical Training program in Clearwater, FL. The learning curve this month was much steeper than last month. I sat in class frantically taking notes on the things that applied to particular patients along with their names. I learned so many new clinical pearls that I will begin applying with patients in the Center.

For those of you that are wondering how I did on my first written and practical tests, I have to tell you old Dr. P. still has it; 96 on my written exam (OK I'll try harder next month!) and a 100 on my practical test. Wish me luck next month because the information keeps compounding.

Also, my certification in Wellness Science is almost finished, with just 1-1/2 written tests yet to complete. I can see the light at the end of the 2-1/2 year tunnel.

Also, just a reminder to visit our new website and please check back often because it's getting better every day.

Eat Right: Pottenger's Cats and People

Have you heard about the swimming White Bengal Tiger named Odin? I received these pictures from one of our "Inner Health Circle tm" members (thanks Deb!) and it made me think about many different things. I deliberated over what a shame it is that we've decimated the wild population of these beautiful animals. I also realized that if I were ever attacked by one of these wonderful creatures, even in a dream, I couldn't escape them by jumping in a lake or river. So much for that theory! Seeing the pictures of Odin eating "raw meat" also made me think of "Pottenger's Cats". Francis M. Pottenger, Jr., M.D. researched the effects of heat-processed foods on cats between 1932 and 1942. Learn more about Dr. Pottenger's research through the Price Pottenger Nutrition Foundation. I will attempt to give you an abridged overview of his 10 years of painstaking research. Dr. Pottenger did generational studies of cats that were fed diets consisting of the following: cooked or raw meat, whole raw milk, pasteurized milk, evaporated milk, or sweetened condensed milk, and cod liver oil.

Dr. Pottenger's findings were amazing. Not only were the cats that were fed a "raw diet" healthier based on criteria which included body weight, agility, fur quality, skeletal structure, and fertility rate; these changes were compounded from generation to generation. He also found that the negative health changes in the same criteria in the cats fed a nutritionally "deficient", processed diet were compounded from generation to generation. By the fourth through seventh generations, many of the effects were irreversible! They were infertile and had a lower survival rate. Sound familiar? The bottom line: the cats that ate whole raw foods were healthier and had longer, more enjoyable and productive lives.

How does this relate to people today? First let's talk about a great deal of research currently being done in a field called Epigenetics which is the up or down regulation of our genes based on our life style choices. One of those life style choices is what we eat. Another factor is how many generations have done it wrong before us. This is the reason for my urgent and passionate appeal to my patients, Inner Health Circle tm members such as yourself, and anyone else who will listen. Depending on your age you may be in the second or third generation raised eating out of a box, a bag, or from a drive through window. You can turn this around starting today by eating one raw whole food. It could be an apple, pear, banana, or steamed organic broccoli or cauliflower. Make one change this week and another next week and the following week. By next year you will be exhilarated with the changes you see and feel, which will spark more positive changes. Just Get Started!

Think Right: Why Drug Interactions Can Kill You

An article that was published on October 18, 2008 elaborates on the idea of why so many individuals have drug interactions. Many of these interactions are categorized as "iatrogenic" (Doctor induced) causes of death. This research study, which was published in the Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism, was titled the "Role of Cytochrome P450 in Drug Interactions". The article revolves around the fact that the liver uses two pathways to clear toxins from the body, one of which is the Cytochrome P450 pathway. Many pharmaceutical drugs either speed up or slow down the function of these clearing pathways by affecting the enzymes (helpers) in the processing of the toxins/drugs. For example, if you are taking a drug that causes the enzymes that clear another drug you may be taking to be reduced in their effectiveness, then you will begin to accumulate toxic levels of the second drug. Considering the fact that many people in our drug laden society may be taking 5 to 10 different drugs, this potentially toxic and often fatal interaction will be magnified.

How can you avoid drug interactions? First, do your best at living the "Health and Wellness" lifestyle that I outline for you in every newsletter. Second, you need to evaluate your drugs with your prescribing Doctor and your Pharmacist as a double check into the potentially harmful side effects. Remember that your prescribing Doctor should be the one to remove you from a drug, which can be like pulling teeth. Also remember that it is your body and you need to be in charge of it. The balance maintained by your body is delicate and can be upset very easily, particularly by harsh drugs. So the fewer that you start taking in the first place the better off you are. By practicing the "Eat Right, Think Right, Move Right and Health and Wellness" paradigm that I profess to all members of my Inner Health Circle tm and patients at the Center for Nutrition and Wellness tm, you will increase the likelihood that you will be able to avoid drugs. You will also increase your potential of avoiding surgical interventions and have a longer, healthier functional lifespan.

Parting Thought
Laughter

A smile is a whisper of a laugh,
A grin always comes before a chuckle.
As the thought precedes the deed
And the lightning the thunder,
A smile is the whisper of a laugh.
