Our Cleansers are Launching. Wish Them Luck!

     We have a wonderful new group of "Cleansers" who will be starting their "Full System Detox Cleanse" in just a few days. This group is all new to the "Cleanse". Many are from a distance away. The exciting thing to me is that not only is the interest in the "Cleanse" growing (our January "Cleanse" is already filling up), but the individuals coming on board for this one are all Silver Inner Health Circle™ Members. This means a couple of things: First of all many are not currently patients in either of my practices. Secondly they are all prequalified and motivated to increase their level of Health and Wellness.
 
       I know that this group of "Cleansers" will not only lose weight and feel better as a result of their 3 week journey, but they will continue the lifestyle changes that they make for the rest of their lives. That is the really big part of this process to me. We are changing people's lives in a positive way FOREVER! That's why this is My Joyful Obligation!
 
     This time around we have made some improvements over our last "Cleanse". In addition to each "Cleanser" receiving ongoing support and encouragement through my weekly emails and meetings, they will also now receive daily emails with the ability to email us any of their questions or concerns as they progress through the "Cleanse".
 
     We will also have two additional presentations at our weekly meetings. We will have Kerry Mack M.T. give a presentation on Message Therapy. We will also have Kim Fallon, Certified Personal Trainer, give a presentation about the benefits of some simple exercises that will be easy to incorporate into everyone's daily routine.
 
     We are all excited and are looking forward to another successful group of "Cleansers" completing the program and changing their lives forever.
 
    Wish them all luck! We will keep our entire Silver Inner Health Circle™ Membership posted on the progress of our "Cleansers" as they progress along the road to better Health and Wellness.

Aunt Ruth is 100 Years Old! How Did She Do It?

     I just returned from my Great Aunt Ruth's 100th Birthday celebration. As I wished her a Happy Birthday she immediately responded with the following unsolicited statement: "It's all because of Living Right." What did Aunt Ruth mean by this? Think Inner Health Circle™ Members, she meant that she Thinks Right, Eats Right, Moves Right, and Sleeps Right (remember we are building T.EA.M.S.).

     Let's take a look at those one at a time. In order to survive as long and as well as Aunt Ruth has she needs to have a Great Attitude, and be able to Adapt to changes that have occurred in her life over the years. In other words she has had to "Think Right". Believe me there have been many. The most recent was the premature death of her son (he smoked for the majority of his life which undoubtedly shortened his). I spoke with my cousin about how she did with this news. I was told that she questioned if he "suffered", and when she was told that he had not she appeared to accept the news as I am sure that she has before about other loved ones in the past, although the loss of a child must be the most "crushing" news that any parent can hear. So here is Rule #1 from Aunt Ruth's life experience: "Be able to adapt to change!" If you can't, the change, whatever it is will destroy you without a doubt.
 
      According to my cousin Aunt Ruth also "doesn't question God's plan for us, and accepts each day as it comes". Again sage words indicating that there is a master plan for us all, and we don't have control over many of the things that occur in our lives.
 
      She "Eats Right" as demonstrated at her party when I watched as she removed the large hoagie roll that was on the plate before her, and ate the "Innards" out of that hoagie. She thereby significantly decreased the refined carbohydrate/glycemic load of that meal.
 
     She "Moves Right" even though she is somewhat limited by the use of a walker, and she is still under her own power. She keeps moving.
 
     I know that she "Sleeps Right" because after we left she went in for a nap. Let's face it, as we age the cells and tissues need more time to regenerate and recharge.
 
     I trust that every one of you out there in our Inner Health Circle™ will strive to live by Aunt Ruth's example. Remember as I have said before, these wonderful and amazing bodies which we all take for granted were designed to last for at least 125 years. But make sure that you take heed of Aunt Ruth's comment to me as I was saying good bye. As I sat at her side and gave her a hug and kiss, I said that I looked forward to seeing her at her 105th celebration. She leaned over to me and said "Only if I am in Good Shape, if I am not good I don't want to be here." Very wise and sage words from a centenarian. She knows how many people there are today either "living" (really not) in nursing facilities who have NO QUALITY OF LIFE! Aunt Ruth wants to continue to live yes, but also alert, productive at some level, and able yet to fulfill a purpose. That is truly what "IT" is all about.

Let's Talk Probiotics

    I am sure that many of you in our "Inner Health Circle™" have at least heard about "Probiotics". If not through your readings then probably through some of the slick marketing on TV from manufacturers of such "Products" as "Yoplait™", and "Kashi™" cereal. I am glad to see that the truth is prevailing at this time. Because according to Julie Deardorff, a reporter for the Tribune Newspapers "... a pending class-action lawsuit alleges that Dannon™ misled consumers about the benefits of Activia and DanActive, both marketed as probiotics."


     You see the problem is that according to the FDA there is no standard definition as to what a "Probiotic" truly is. As noted in this same article by probiotic researcher Gregor Reid, "Sadly, of the hundreds of new products launched in recent years, very few have been shown to be probiotic." A big part of the problem is that in order to process these "Products" they are heated, and heat destroys probiotics. The correct way to get probiotics into your diet is not through some highly processed "food product". The only food product I know that will give you a decent dose of probiotic bacteria is Raw Organic Yogurt. Many of you know that I am not a strong dairy advocate, however if you are going to consume dairy do it 'Raw", meaning unpasteurized (remember - heat kills the good probiotic bacteria). Also make sure that it is organic. This means that you will not be consuming antibiotics and hormones with your dairy. You can also supplement your diet with a good quality Probiotic Supplement like our Innate Choice™ Probiotics. Do not use a cheap probiotic supplement off of the store shelf at your local Supermarket, Health Food Store, Wal-Mart, or Target. These will be a poor quality supplement. How can I make such a blanket statement you might be asking? It's because of what I just told you, "Probiotics must be refrigerated, not only at the point of sale, but also during manufacturing and transport". Our Innate Choice™ Probiotics always are. As I always say, "With nutritional supplements you get what you pay for!" I am sure that you can buy a supplement that is less expensive than ours, but you might as well be doing nothing because you will get the same result, Nothing!

     I must state at this point that I know without a doubt you and virtually every other person who eats the American diet (based on the "French Fry Food Group") is deficient in probiotic intestinal flora. I know this not only from my clinical experience with patients, but also because I know that the intestinal flora (good gut bacteria) has been decimated by the long term abuse of antibiotic drugs in this country for the last 60 + years. I also know this because the primary food source that we should be feeding these little guys every day is fiber, which is not found in the "French Fry Diet". You see we are supposed to live in a Symbiotic (mutually beneficial) relationship with these little guys. In my opinion we get the better end of this deal. All we have to do is replenish these little guys every so often with the foods that we eat, and feed them some good fiber. In return they do such important things as taking care of digesting our food and giving us a well functioning Immune System. These little guys actually create the first line of defense in our immune systems. That is something that I will cover in more detail in my next article on this important subject.

MRSLEEP RIGHT

 

Our BIG Debut

    This month we debut our first "Sleep Right" article. Coincidentally, while I was eating dinner the last night that I was in Iowa at our Annual Homecoming and my Alumni Association Board Meetings (they were long meetings today), I picked up the USA Today, and there on the front page I read the headline "6 Hours of Sleep? It's not enough". Well for those of us who know that the fourth pillar of health is "Sleep Right", we also recognize that this statement is absolutely true. But what are the consequences of not sleeping more than 6 hours?


     According to Clete Kushida, president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine Center; "sleep deprivation has been linked to an increase in motor vehicle accidents, deficiencies in short-term memory (there is that Alzheimer's Disease/Disorder), focus and attention." Dr. Kushida goes on to state that "most people who habitually get less than eight hours sleep a night are only building up a large, and dangerous sleep debt." She ends by saying that "For now the only real answer to true productivity is to sleep as much as your body needs."
 
     Alright I know that this information may motivate those of you who simply do not get enough sleep by choice, because you are staying up too late watching your favorite shows or ball games. Why not DVR or TiVo™ those late night shows? But what about those of you who just can't fall asleep, or stay asleep? There are alternatives that I will be bringing to you in future Newsletters that will help, so hang in there. For now remember that our Move Right will help your Sleep Right. In other words exercise helps to stimulate proper rest. Eat Right helps as well. Avoid or limit those late night snacks, and definitely no p.m. caffeine (Coffee, Tea, or Chocolate).
