Can Alzheimer's Disease Be Prevented?

     I have to tell you that I just finished reading a wonderful research article in the New England Journal of Medicine. I would like to compliment Dr.s Querfurth and LaFerla on their concise assessment of the existing body of knowledge regarding Alzheimer’s. 

     What I must say about what these two wonderfully knowledgeable doctors had to say is this: first of all the medical community is once again looking for a “cure”, rather than a way to “PREVENT” this disorder from beginning in the first place! Read entire article.

A Low Essential Fat Diet May Cause Your Baby to be a Fat Adult!

     A study that was just published in the Bio-Med Central Journal indicates that if a newborn does not receive a diet (which at that stage in life should be mother’s milk) which is high in alpha-linoleic acid (ALA), then he or she will be a” fatter adult”.

     Alpha-linoleic acid is an Essential Fatty Acid (EFA). EFA’s are a form of “good fat”. This means that the body cannot manufacture it on its own. It must be consumed in the diet. Unfortunately most Americans do not consume this nutrient which is absolutely required for Health and Wellness.  Read entire article.

    I have consistently done my best to assist my patients in both of my practices, in supporting bone and joint health and in avoiding osteoporosis without having to resort to the use of oral “anti-osteoporosis” drugs. This class of drugs into which Fosamax® falls is technically categorized as “Bisphosphonates”. Alzheimer's - continued

 

By the way I do not believe that A.D. is in fact a ‘disease” at all. As I have said to our Silver Inner Health Circletm members hundreds of times before, “this is a disorder; it is just an imbalance in the system.” In this case I believe that it is a number of imbalances which all coalesce into one Horrific Mess of a Disorder in an otherwise wonderfully balancing and stabilizing system.

      Let’s look at the facts as these 2 marvelous researchers so eloquently put them in their article. First of all, one issue that they presented was that “good old Insulin Resistance’ is one of the culprits in the chain of events that leads to Alzheimer’s “Disorder” (A.D.) In fact the sequella or secondary effects of diabetes and insulin resistance cause a number of the complications that lead to A.D. So what are these secondary effects, you might wonder? Well let’s start with the fact that in diabetes and insulin resistance you will have increased circulating Insulin, and Glucose/Sugar. These “problems” will cause inflammation and altered circulation, both of which are disorders which lead to altered transmission of nerve impulses in the brain, and a breakdown of the nerves in the brain. There is also a build-up of free radicals in the blood. These not only contribute to the breakdown of cells and tissues in the brain but also can contribute to the inflammatory load in the body. There is a breakdown of the communication pathways between nerve cells in the brain for a variety of reasons and an alteration in the energy producing portion of the cells in the brain. Cholesterol is also an issue. Understand, as I taught our recent group of “New Years Cleansers”, cholesterol is a necessary constituent of many bodily functions including the manufacturing of Vitamin D, the production of Hormones, and the Manufacturing of Nerve Cells.

      So what do we Health and Wellness Believers need to do to combat what these doctors have outlined so well as the “disease condition of Alzheimer’s? First and foremost you must understand that Alzheimer’s is not a disease, it is an “Imbalance”, a situation where you have “created’ numerous “deficiencies” and “toxicities” in your body. How could you have done this? Well, YOU DIDN’T EAT RIGHT, THINK RIGHT, MOVE RIGHT, or SLEEP RIGHT! Yes, it is that simple!!!!!!!  Let us all go a step beyond that easy Dr. Pfeiffer explanation and get into the meat. You see, as all of our Cleansers have learned, you need to decrease you consumption of “PRODUCT”, and increase you consumption of whole, raw foods. These foods should be mainly plant based, and mainly vegetables with some fruits and meat (mainly fish and fowl, and remember fresh caught, grass fed meat). This step will decrease 2 of the complications that drive your system to Alzheimer’s. 

     You need to decrease your inflammatory load. You will do this by decreasing your grain-based diet. Remember grains are “INFLAMMATORY”!!! We want to decrease inflammation so decrease the cause of inflammation.                 

    Take vitamin D, I guarantee that the vast majority of you are deficient in vitamin D. You are also deficient in good Omega 3 fatty acids, so you need to supplement with some Omega 3 fish oil like our Innate Choice Omega Sufficiency. This will provide some good DHA’s for your brain. The good fats that your brain needs. It will also decrease inflammation, thin your blood and increase circulation to your brain. It will also create healthier cell membranes so that transport of nutrients into the cells, and waste products out of the cells, will be enhanced.

     What else do you need to do? Well, you need to exercise. There are numerous studies that have shown that exercise (the “Move Right” component of our Health and Wellness Paradigm) will slow the onset of Alzheimer’s. You also need to keep your mind active. Have a job No matter how small/part time it is, it will still get you out among people. Socializing is important! You need to volunteer, give of your time, knowledge and talents. This will keep you healthier in many other ways too.

     These knowledgeable and intelligent doctors went ahead and defaulted to the same thing that most medical professionals regress to as an explanation for many, if not most diseases and disorders today, and that is ‘Your Genetics”. Once again Silver Inner Health Circle members I must tell you that this doesn’t have to be the case. I am not saying that you may not be “genetically predisposed to getting Alzheimer’s but don’t forget about the subject of “Epigenetics” that I presented to you recently in a Health Hints article.  You can however either “up-regulate” (switch on), or down-regulate (switch off) those genes by doing the right things for your body. (See above). 

    O.K. gang, so now you know just a few EXTREMELY IMPORTANT” things that you can do to decrease the likelihood that you will get Alzheimer’s “DISORDER” in the future. Now all that you have to do is just “DO IT”!!!!!!  Onto Think Right

 

MOVE RIGHT- continued

 

Ten million people use these drugs, and they generate 3.5 billion dollars annually for the pharmaceutical companies which manufacture them. A number of years ago you may have heard about the lawsuit that Merck had been going through due to the destruction of the jaw bones in patients who took Fosamax®. This turned out to be a significant complication of this drug. Now the manufacturers of Bisphosphonates may have a new concern. This is that these drugs, rather than lessening the likelihood that an individual will experience a hip fracture, may actually increase the likelihood. Read published article here. The concern is for those individuals who use this drug for 5 years or more. 

      How could a drug that is supposed to increase bone strength actually decrease it, you might ask? Well the concern here is in the quality of the bone. I have told patients for years that my understanding and the study that I have done on this subject lead me to the conclusion that the way these drugs cause calcium to be deposited is not the way that the body would do the job naturally. My understanding of the type of fractures that these individuals are experiencing is that rather than there being a “clean break” of the bone as there would be with a typical fracture, these individuals experience more of a “shattering” of the bone. My understanding of the problem with the available information at this point, is that the deposition of calcium on the bones of the individuals who use these drugs occurs exactly in that way. In other words the calcium is deposited “on” the bone not throughout the bone. This creates a “glass-like” bone where there is calcium thick on the periphery of the bone, but not “into” the core of the bone. For this reason when there is a fracture of the hip, the bone “shatters” like glass when it breaks.

     You can read here what the FDA has to say about this concern. Just remember that the FDA did not act very fast when the whole issue of “Mandibular Necrosis” (Fosajaw) was originally brought to light. 

      So what should those of you who have concerns regarding “Osteoporosis”, or its precursor “Osteopenia” do to help yourselves? First of all make sure that you are getting in enough calcium, and please make sure that it is a good quality like our “Calcifood” from Standard Process. You must also be taking in enough Vitamin D. Cataplex D our whole food source of Vitamin D contains 800 IU of D in each tiny tablet. It is extremely bioavailable too, which means that it will be easy for your body to absorb and utilize. I also use a supplement to assist the parathyroid gland in its function, called Cal-Ma-Plus. What is the other key component to this equation? You got it - you need to “Move Right”. That’s right you have to exercise! Get out there and move around. The important thing is that the exercise is weight bearing, meaning that you have to “stress” the bones. Walking is Great for this!

Therefore, if mom is not consuming enough (or any) EFA’s in her diet (which unfortunately today is the rule and not the exception) then she is creating a number of health risks for herself as well as for her child. One of those health risks is that she is creating the potential that her son or daughter will be “fat” (obese, or over-weight) as an adult.

     Let’s look at some of the other health benefits of Alpha- Linoleic Acid. Studies have shown that ALA’s decrease the risk of certain forms of cancer, particularly certain breast cancers which are estrogen dependant. Other studies have shown significant benefits of supplementation with a good ALA source relative to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, inflammation from such conditions as arthritis, Parkinson’s disease, and inflammatory bowel disorders. Other health benefits have also been demonstrated with conditions such as peri-menopausal and menopausal Hot Flashes. 

      So where do you get this essential component to the whole “Wellness Paradigm”. Probably the most concentrated source of Alpha-Linoleic Acid is a good quality Organic Flax Oil. Ours is the best quality that I have been able to find. This is a high quality ORGANIC source of Flax Seed Oil. I take 2 -1000 mg. gel caps every day. 

     Why not do something good for yourself, and if you are expecting or planning on bringing a new life into the world then do your best to make him or her as healthy as you possibly can. Give that new life and you a head start on Health and Wellness. Onto the next article
