The Cost of Good Health
The cost of good health can never be accurately measured until you don't have it, then the true value of good health becomes apparent. Good health is worth all of the money and possessions that you have.

The Truth About Common Pain Relievers
As a practicing Doctor of Chiropractic for 25 years I have provided safe, effective, drug free care for my patients. I have been able to assist them in avoiding the use of prescription and over the counter pain relieving (analgesic) drugs, and provided quick, effective treatment with few if any side effects. Unfortunately today, many individuals are unaware of the "chiropractic alternative" and end up using a plethora of drugs, many of which are self prescribed, to deal with pain (the symptom) instead of dealing with the cause of the symptom and having it corrected. This, I am sad to say, is due to many factors including all of the Big Pharma's marketing efforts, and our "medical mentality" which is based on "symptom suppression" rather than " cause resolution". This is part of the reason that for years I have had patients come into my office who began using OTC (over the counter) drugs to deaden their pain, and when their bodies adapted to these drugs (as is always the case) they progressed to the "hard stuff". I have patients who have been on morphine and morphine derivative drugs for years before seeking care in our office, and having the true cause of their symptoms identified and corrected. When that occurs the need for these harmful drugs is eliminated.
For those of you who are using "just some Ibuprofen" to help with the pain, and have been doing so for more than just a few days read this link, and see what you are actually doing to your body. If you have a friend or loved on who is doing this forward this to him or her so that he or she can learn the truth about these devastating drugs.

Dr. P.

What is Happiness?
This was forwarded to me by a Silver Inner Health Circle™ friend. When I first read this it reminded me of what I had gone through with my own father when I realized that he could no longer live in our home. It was becoming an unsafe environment for him, and his situation was creating a great deal of stress on the entire family. In spite of his physical and mental state he graciously and gladly accepted the change that he was about to experience as he moved into the assisted living facility that we had chosen for him. I will never forget that day, not knowing how he would feel about it. I also will never forget the feeling that I had as I was about to leave my Dad behind. It was probably the same feeling that he and my Mom had the day they dropped me off at college and drove away. However my Dad looked at me and said "This is a nice place". He accepted the change. For those of you who have been through my "Stress" seminar you now know that the key to a happy, long and prosperous life is to be able to accept and adapt to change. Well, I must say that my Dad did, and he flourished there as well in many respects. He had a couple of "lady friends" during his time there. He also became known to everyone, and to visitors, as "The Greeter", since he would wave to everyone, and ask "How are you doing today?" Take a moment and watch this quick "Think Right" and see if it doesn't change your perspective for the better.

Back to Basics
Last night we were invited to dinner at the home of some friends of ours. This is a wonderful couple who not only care about their health but also care greatly about each other. That my friends will be a subject for another "Think Right" article in the future. Since she had just graduated from our "Spring Cleaning Cleanse Event" our lady friend went out of her way to create a wonderful meal which consisted of a beautiful raw organic salad compliments of my wife, to which our host added an orange balsamic vinaigrette, which actually sparked the thought for this article. More on that in a minute.

UPDATE: Natural Supplement Regulation
As of June 26, 2010 the Congressional debate ended on the Bill that would have given the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) authority over all nutritional supplements. As you can see I am referring to this Bill in the past tense because it went down in flames, at least this amendment to the Finance Bill did. That means that due to the efforts of concerned citizens such as you and I this ridiculous amendment was defeated. The people have spoken, and they have said "keep your hands off of my nutritional supplements". I would like to commend those Silver Inner Health Circle members who contacted their Congressmen to vote against this bill and thwarted the efforts of Big Pharma to get a strong hold on this industry. One more win for the "Good Guys!

What Could Be Worse Than the Oil Spill in the Gulf?
Last night I watched a movie (well, at least part of it, until it became too depressing for me to continue watching. Even I must protect my "Think Right").The movie was called "The Road." I guess in part because it was very thought-provoking and depressing, in my opinion it was not a box office hit. Be that as it may, it did have a very interesting story line. In an effort to not spoil the story for those of you who are planning to rush out and rent this one tonight, I will give you a brief overview of the movie: Mom, Dad, and Son all survive a nuclear or natural disaster, you never really know which. Mom commits suicide, and Dad and Son set off south to find a warmer climate, and possibly more food. The premise of the movie is humans have in some way destroyed the environment. "Nancy's Recipe"
Nancy is one of our recent Spring Cleaning Cleanse graduates who is obviously continuing to progress up the Health and Wellness paradigm ladder. See what you think of her Great Recipe. The only comment that I would make as a possible improvement, since I think that we can modify on one ingredient and create an even healthier mix would be to substitute olive oilfor the Canola oil. That way you will improve on the oil type and get some Great Omega 9 fatty acids as well. I want to thank Nancy and our entire class of Cleanse Graduates, and encourage all of our past and present Cleansers to continue to make improvements every day. The right choices will enhance your overall Health and Wellness, and add years to you life and life to your years!
Yours in Health,

Recent and Upcoming Events:

"Dead Zone" - continued |
|
Similarly, when I was about 14 years old, I remember watching the movie "Soylent Green;" the conclusion of this movie asserts that we are in fact rapidly consuming our natural resources, and if we are not careful we could end up destroying our food supply, over-populating our planet, and getting to the point where our only option for survival would be to euthanize our elderly and use them to feed our population. It may sound pretty far fetched to some of you, but at least some parts of this plot seem more plausible today than they did almost 40 years ago.
"Alright Dr. P., so what do a couple of hypothetical, futuristic movies have to do with my health and wellness," you might ask? Well let's "T'ink about this, class," and put it all into a modern perspective. I think we can all agree that recent events have caused even the most militant non-believers among us to realize that we are doing a great job of destroying our environment. After all, at last estimate we have currently poured as much as 141 million gallons of crude oil into the Gulf. I'd say that this is a pretty good indication that we are doing our best to work towards the implementation of the "Soylent Green" mindset.
Now, let's look at an environmental problem that I had reported to you quite some time ago, which is at least as large of a concern to our environment as "our oil slick." The "Dead Zone" that we have created off of our shore line has been caused by the overuse of nitrogen-based fertilizers that wash off with the topsoil and ultimately run into our oceans. This process causes massive algae blooms--which die off--and as they decompose, these little guys suck all of the oxygen out of the water, and thereby asphyxiate all of the tropical life, both plant and animal. This problem is being perpetuated by the massive growth of (often times GMO) heavily fertilized corn, which is subsidized by our government for a great reason: to offset crude oil dependency. WOW Batman, isn't it interesting to see how these two players at odds with one another (the "bad guy" crude oil destroying our environment, the "good guy" corn being grown to make ethanol to offset our use of oil) are both really destroying our environment? The irony is that one of these two players is actually being grown in massive quantities in order to help our environment.
So what has happened to the "Dead Zone" since I last reported to you? Well, I am sorry to say that it has grown. It is currently the size of New Jersey, and it is anticipated that it will grow to 8500 square miles this year. So, what do we do about it? Well gang, there are alternatives to corn. One of these would be use of fallow ground to grow native grasses which can also be converted to alcohol. This is the same idea that I told you about regarding the CFL's that are being shoved down our throats. CFL's, or Compact Florescent Lights, have been perpetuated for a good reason. They conserve electricity--and they do. They also create a growing environmental hazard for us as we discard them, and they pollute our environment more and more because they contain mercury. This is obviously a subject for another article, but there is an alternative to this problem. LCD, or Liquid Crystal Diode, lighting. This lighting uses an even smaller amount of electricity than the CFL's, and no mercury. LCD lighting also lasts longer than CFL lighting. The downside, however, is the cost. You see, since LCD lighting is built on a "sapphire" base, it is expensive to manufacture and therefore purchase. However Silver Inner Health Circle members take heart, because good old Yankee ingenuity is coming into play. A new base material is being developed as we speak, and the affordability problem will be handled soon.
So, what do we learn from all of this? I guess we learn that while we all want to protect our environment and preserve our natural resources, we also have to look at the long-term effects of what we are doing. Is the short-term thinking "it makes me feel good that we are doing something good for our environment" going to be offset by the long-term "oh no, what have we done?"
The production of corn for ethanol-based fuels is anticipated to rise in the coming years. Just remember that as it does, the size of our "Dead Zone" will increase proportionately. Story

EAT RIGHT - continued |
|
She had grilled some organic broccoli and sautéed some organic eggplant with organic tomatoes. This surrounded a beautiful piece of wild-caught Sock Eye Salmon. This was topped off with organic blackberries, and strawberries for dessert. A wonderfully healthy meal. I think we can all agree on that. We then had a cup of organic Yogi Gogi berry green tea.
Afterwards we were helping to clear the table and she showed me the salad dressing that she had used since it was one of the few things that she was unable to find in the organic section for the preparation of this marvelous meal. I quickly reviewed the ingredients and "Nutrition Facts" which are located on the back of every processed food container. Here class is where we start our lesson. I will apologize in advance to those of you to whom this will be a review, but always remember a review even for those of us who "know this already" can often shed some light on a detail that we had forgotten. So, lesson number one is that whatever is listed on the ingredient list first is found in the greatest concentration in the food. In our case that was vinegar. O.K. not a bad start, but it was down hill from there as far as our no refined sugar, and low carb philosophy from the Center and the "Cleanse" go. The next ingredient was orange juice. You guys know that I have said many times before that I want you to "eat your fruit not drink it". When we drink fruit juices we are concentrating the fruit sugars. The third ingredient was, you guessed it the "Big S" sugar. When we looked at the Nutrition Facts we saw that the carbohydrate load was 4 grams of carbs/sugars in a tablespoon. When we compared that with a bottle of balsamic that she had on hand, it in fact contained half of the carbs on a tablespoon, just 2 grams. Now I used this example to bring out a point not to detract from this wonderfully healthy meal which our friends obviously went to a great deal of trouble to prepare for us. My point is that we had a lesson in the kitchen about checking labels. Obviously the difference between 2 and 4 grams of carbs is not great, but if you add up all of the "double amount of carbs" that you consume in one day it can be dramatic.
So, what do I want you to take away from this story? Well first of all I want you to read labels. When my wife and I began down this road of Health and Wellness many years ago, we became avid label readers. Look at the list of ingredients in a food. Realize that the concentration of the ingredients decreases as you go down the list. Obviously then we want the sugars and carbs to be as low as possible on the list, or better yet not on the list at all. The other thing that you don't want to see on the list of ingredients is trans-fats. Watch these tricky food processors because they will hide this one in multiple places. They might not call them "Trans-Fats". Instead they might call them "Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil", or "Hydrogenated You Name It Oil". You can see that the key word here is "Hydrogenated". That means "Trans-Fat. To be safe look at the Nutrition Facts list again. Trans-fats will be listed under "Total Fat". We want absolutely NONE of this in our diet.
What else do you want to see on the Nutrition Facts list? Little or no SUGARS! You also want the "Total Carbohydrates" to be as low as possible. You also want to watch the "Saturated Fat" column. This should be either very low or zero.
So the next time that I go into the super market, not only do I want to see you shopping the perimeter of the store, (remember, stay away from the "DARK" center aisles of the store. This is where all of the toxic processed food is lurking) but I expect to see everyone with their heads bowed down reading labels, and praying for those who venture into the center aisles.
