It's That Time of Year Again!
Those of you who have been members since last year will recall the series of articles that I had written on the infamous "Swine Flu". Those of you who were not receiving my newsletter back then can read them here. The point is, as I had told you back then the swine flu was not the horrific threat which you were being lead to believe at the time. Those of you who followed my recommendations found that not only did you not end up "getting" the swine flu, but many of you commented to me that you did not receive the "seasonal flu", and were not as "sick" as you had been in previous years. read entire article

November is Diabetes Awareness Month
Those of you who have followed my articles on vitamin D in the last 2 editions of Health Hints™ are well versed in the importance of having sufficient levels of vitamin D in order to maintain Health and Wellness. You will also recall that I had listed a number of disorders which are now being linked to a vitamin D deficiency. One of those disorders was "the Big D". That's right Diabetes!

Why Do I Need to Supplement with Vitamin D?
You may have heard in the news or from a friend that Vitamin D deficiency is one of the most rampant vitamin deficiencies in our country today. Well I am here to tell you all that it is and we as a society are suffering from numerous "deficiency syndromes" due to lack of this essential nutrient which manifest in many different ways. These conditions take the form of such things as diabetes, cancer, heart disease, various neurological disorders, and hormone deficiencies. In order for you to comprehend how a deficiency of this vital nutrient can cause such widespread and severe conditions it is essential for you to understand more about Vitamin D and its various forms. read entire article

"Who's Been Sleeping In My Bed?"
Sometimes you wonder if you should be renting your bed out for the night since you are using it so little. Sleep is something that comes to many in dribs and drabs throughout the night, or you may have extreme difficulty getting there in the first place then you are able to grab "a few hours" before you have to get up and try to lead a productive life. Whichever flavor of sleeplessness you may suffer from it will tax your system, drain your energy, and when long- standing enough create states of fear, anxiety, stroke, depression, A.D.D. and paranoia. read entire article

So what was the combination that helped to keep you healthy and well through the holiday season and beyond? It was our "Probotic RTZ" supplement, and Vitamin D. This one-two combination helped many of our members stay healthier through our long winter season last year.
The dosage that I recommend to you would be 2 Probotic RTZ and 2 Vitamin D per day through the winter/ "Flu" season. This will generally assist you in bolstering your immune system and fighting off the invaders (bacteria and viruses) that you may encounter.
Let's see that our entire Silver Inner Health Circle membership applies and uses all of our T.E.A.M.S. information that I have provided to you this year. For those of you who are wondering just what that means, that is the "Think Right, Eat Right, Move Right, and Sleep Right" philosophy that I have been teaching and preaching to you all year long. If you have been reading, learning, and applying all of this good information throughout the last year, and perhaps even further back, you are now reaping the rewards, and you will see the benefits in particular this winter.
So try our one-two supplement combo, and get yourself through this winter season. You have read all that I have written about Vitamin D deficiency. You know that if you haven't had a simple blood test to determine your Vitamin D level you need to as soon as possible. I also would be willing to bet that your D level, if it isn't deficient is in the "low normal" range. This needs to be compensated for with good supplementation right away. Begin today getting yourself on track and preparing for the "Onslaught of Winter!

In honor of National Diabetes Awareness Month I would like to share another study with you. This is the Framingham Offspring Study, which was published in June of this year in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The Framingham Offspring Study found that there was a direct relationship between the onset of diabetes and vitamin D levels. The authors of the study stated "Our findings suggest that higher vitamin D status is associated with decreased risk of Type 2 Diabetes. Maintaining optimal 25-hydroxyvitamin D status may be a strategy to prevent the development of Type 2 Diabetes."
The bottom line is that there are many different factors which will directly influence the onset of diabetes. You know that what you eat has a direct and significant influence on your development of this debilitating disorder. If you don't sleep well your likelihood of developing diabetes will go up. Stress will also increase your odds of diabetes. Lack of exercise increases diabetes rates. Does this all sound familiar to you out there? That's right, as Dr. Pfeiffer is constantly reminding you; "You must Eat Right, Think Right, Move Right, and Sleep Right in order to maintain Health and Wellness!
So what do you need to do now? First of all change your belief system. If you continue to do the wrong things you will be lead down the path of "disease and sickness", and drugs and surgery. Next get your vitamin D level tested. Then begin supplementing with a high quality vitamin D supplement. I can assure you that by creating sufficient levels of vitamin D you will be reducing your likelihood of developing diabetes, but also a plethora of other debilitating disorders from cancer to heart disease.
Quite frankly I think it is a shame that we have to have a Diabetes Awareness Month. There are currently 1.6 million new cases of diabetes diagnosed in Americans 20 years of age and older each year. Currently there are 23.6 million Americans who have diabetes. These statistics make me sad. They also motivate me to want to get the word out and teach more of you what you can do to eliminate this potential threat. Take a moment to read how Bernie made out when he decided to move over from the "Dark Side" and begin living a lifestyle of Health and Wellness.
The statistics that I just quoted to you are from the American Diabetes Association. I also feel it is a shame that this condition has grown to such a proportion that we need an "Association" to represent the millions of individuals who haven't yet seen the light. next article

First of all, this unique and vitally essential nutrient stands alone as a nutrient which the body can manufacture itself. That is providing that you give your body the necessary components or building blocks required to manufacture it. So, what are these "necessary components"? Well I think that the components will surprise most of you, since you have all been "educated" (or what I prefer to call 'brain washed") to believe the first one is "bad" for you. So "bad" that the medical community would have you drive your levels of this component down to extremely unhealthy readings, which of course would be verified by a blood test to make it official. What is this mystery component of Vitamin D? It is "Cholesterol"!?!?! You might be saying to yourself right now; "Cholesterol, I thought that was bad for my health?" No, but that is what you have been spoon fed to believe. You see I agree that extremely high cholesterol levels can be unhealthy. I also recognize that if you "Eat Right, Think Right, Move Right, and Sleep Right" not only will your cholesterol levels be correct, but so will your sugar levels, and your weight. By the way, do you think that the drug industry might have a hand in the "Cholesterol Craze"? Well considering that cholesterol lowering drugs (the class of drugs called "Statins") are one of the highest revenue producing drugs marketed to the public; I think that "Big Pharma" might just be benefiting from this "Craze".
The other component is "Good 'Ol" Sun Light! That's right, sun light is necessary for your body to manufacture Vitamin D. As all our Silver Inner Health Circle members know from what I have written in the past, there are only 2 things that will cause disease and disorder in your body. One is a toxicity of something, whether it is good or bad for you. Remember as I have said for years, "too much of a good thing is no good!" This however is not the problem with Vitamin D. Most of us are deficient in this essential nutrient. We are deficient in it because we are deficient in the building blocks for it, specifically "Cholesterol" and "Sunlight". And "why" you might ask are we deficient in sunlight? Well there are two reasons; first we don't go outside enough. We work indoors for the most part, and secondly we have been educated ("brain washed") to be afraid of the sun. Yes, too much sun has been linked to skin cancer. But there are many other reasons for this due to other deficiencies from which many in our culture suffer (this is the subject for another article) that assist in allowing this to occur.
Ten minutes of full body exposure to the sun is what is typically recommended for proper health. So, sunlight is an essential component to the Vitamin D synthesis process in our bodies.
So what is Vitamin D? Well did you know that Vitamin D3 is actually a hormone? That's right a hormone. No wonder receptor sites where this essential vitamin can link up are found on virtually all tissues, glands and organs in the body.
Here is how it is formed in your body. The initial component is 7- dehydrocholesterol which is found in the skin of all animals. Notice that second half of the word. You see "cholesterol" is not a bad thing. It is actually a necessary component, a building block if you will, for not only this "hormone" but also for virtually every other hormone that your body synthesizes. This component is converted with the help of sunlight into a form called "cholecalciferol" (Vitamin D3) which is the active form of Vitamin D. The hormone effects of Vitamin D occur when cholecalciferol is converted to 1,25-hydroxy Vitamin D, or "Calcitriol". This hormone controls phosphorus, calcium, and bone metabolism (the build up and break down of bone), as well as neuro-muscular (meaning all nerve and muscle) function.
Not only is Vitamin D3 important for proper "bone health", it has also been linked to other health concerns such as depression, cancer, diabetes, insulin resistance, back pain, pre-eclampsia during pregnancy, impaired immune function, and macular degeneration. Age related kidney function deterioration has also been linked to Vitamin D deficiency.
This deficiency certainly does affect a lot, doesn't it? We are just beginning to see the research coming in on this essential nutrient/hormone. I know that we are going to see in the coming years that this previously little known nutrient will have even farther reaching health effects, and I will even go so far as to say that I believe that the health effects of Vitamin D will be seen in virtually every "disease" and disorder that plagues our society today.
So why is the vast majority of our population so deficient in this essential nutrient? One reason may be our fear. Fear of cholesterol, and of the sun. Please understand that I want you to have your cholesterol levels checked. I want you to make the appropriate life-style changes in order to maintain appropriate levels (NOT around or under 100 which the medical community is pushing for now). This is important. I also want to see that you receive enough sunlight. Not too much and not too little. You must be cautious with "slathering" yourself with too much sun screen which has the effect of blocking the health producing UV rays of the sun, and thereby aids in creating this life altering and yes life threatening deficiency.
It is also important for all our Silver Inner Health Circlemembers to realize that as they age the ability of our bodies to create Vitamin D is diminished. The conversion of Vitamin D occurs on the skin, but also in the gut, liver and the kidneys. As these organs begin to break down over time, the ability of our bodies to produce sufficient quantities of Vitamin D also diminishes.
So where does this leave us? Well number one you must have your Vitamin D level tested. Those of you who are patients, ask Denise or Kerry and we will see that this gets done. Those of you who are not ask your doctor to run this test for you ASAP. Just get it done!
The next thing that you need to do is to begin supplementing your diet with Vitamin D. The form that we use is Vitamin D3 at 1000 iu. Make sure unless you have some medical reason, that you are getting enough sunlight (10 minutes per day of full body exposure). Understand more about the realities of cholesterol. Watch my DVD on "Eating Right and Cholesterol". You need to just understand the realities of this critically important nutrient/hormone, and begin creating "Sufficiency and Purity" in your system by creating sufficient quantities of Vitamin D in your body.

Sleep Right - cont'd
|
Some of the causes of sleeplessness can be the effects of sleep apnea, side effects of prescription drugs (they all have side effects), and pain syndromes such as "fibromyalgia syndrome". The disheartening thing about this syndrome is that sleep loss actually makes the condition worse.
All of our Silver Inner Health Circle members understand that the Fourth Pillar of our T.E.A.M.S. Health Paradigm is that you must "Sleep Right". If you are not getting 7 or 8 hours of sleep every night, you are becoming sleep deprived. Sleep deprivation will begin having Physical and Physiological effects on your body in addition to the Psychological ones that I just mentioned. Those effects include weight gain, increased blood pressure, and increased risk of cardiovascular disorders. I recently read of one study which found that even sleep deprived teenagers also face an increased risk of elevated blood pressure. You see this problem is rampant in our society. It affects the young and old alike.
I believe that most of you who are suffering from this "Deprivation Syndrome" understand how it makes you feel. But what can you do about it? Well let's discuss some things that you can do that will help. Before I get started however I want to make sure that you read all of the ideas that I am presenting since some will be similar to those that you heard from "dear old Aunt Bessie" who was "so concerned about you", and just wanted to tell you "what worked for her". Some of what I will tell you I am sure that you have heard before, but prior to you just saying "this is the same stuff that I've heard before" make sure first that it is the "same stuff", and secondly make sure that you actually implemented the recommendation. Just because you heard it before doesn't mean that you did it. So this time do it!
Alright, so what is issue number one that I want you to address? It is your mattress of course. It is not a good idea to keep a mattress longer than 10-15 years due to the wear and tear that you put it through. Make sure that you flip and rotate your mattress monthly so that you don't get "wear tracks" in it.
Choose a mattress that has a trial period so that if you do not like it you can return it and get another one. Most good mattresses come with a trial period of anywhere from 90 days to up to five years, depending on where you buy yours. Make sure however that you DO NOT buy a mattress if you do not have the ability to return it.
Everyone has their own preference as far as the firmness of a mattress. The key is that it is comfortable to you. Try them out in the store, and I mean try them out! Don't just bounce on it a few times and say "O.K. I guess it will be alright." Lay on it for a while. I don't care who is watching you. Tell the salesman to "take a hike" you want to take it for a "test drive." In my experience guys never want to do this, so ladies you either need to tell them that they have to, or tell them you will pick out what works for you and they have to "deal with" what they get. Another mattress type that many of my patients, and yours truly use, is the air support system type. The nice thing about this is that you and your "Honey" can set the firmness to your liking. The other nice thing is that you can vary this firmness to suit your needs throughout the life of the mattress.
How about sleeping positions? Well as I tell all of my patients, "you should never sleep on your stomach!" The reason is because as you remain in this position your abdomen will sink in and you will put significant stress on the joints and nerves on your low back. The double whammy here is that you must also rotate your head so that you can breathe. This puts significant stress on your neck, shoulders, and upper back. Now that I have said that I can tell you that most of you are sleeping on your stomach, so don't feel bad. This is a correctable disorder however. You can start out sleeping on your side using a pillow between your knees which you should do anyway. You can also use a "body pillow" which will support your entire body in that position. If you really have trouble in keeping yourself off of your stomach you can wear a night shirt with a pocket in the front. Put a tennis ball in the front pocket. This will remind you very fast if you happen to roll over onto your stomach throughout the night. On your back is also o.k. but only with pillows under your knees.
The pillow that you use under your head is also extremely important. If you are sleeping on your back then your pillow should be thinner than if you are sleeping on your side. Your head should be in a neutral position when you rest your head on it, meaning that it should not be raised up, or tipped back. It should not be bent up or down either if you are on your side.
Another thing that you want to avoid is having light "seeping" into your bedroom. Shades should be drawn completely, and outside lights should be turned off. Even LCD lights from your alarm clock will affect your sleep patterns, so turn the clock face away from you.
Do not watch a TV in your room before you go to bed, or use your computer in bed, or listen to your radio or I-pod. All of these things are stimulants. They tend to ramp your system up when you should be ramping down. You also want to be cautious about what you watch of listen to as well. Remember that scary or controversial subjects which you find "upsetting" should be avoided for at least an hour prior to retiring to bed.
Also no alcohol, caffeine, or exercise within 2 hours of going to bed. These will stimulate your system when you are attempting to "shut down". You also want to watch how much water you drink for at least an hour before you go to bed. You don't need a wake-up call an hour or two after retiring.
Try to keep your bedtime and wake time as consistent as you possibly can. This creates a rhythm of sleep as well. Your body's clock will truly appreciate this.
Far too many people in my opinion today are using drugs to assist them in sleeping. If you have made all of the changes that I have recommended and you are continuing to have problems getting enough sound sleep, then we need to look at other causes, and solutions.
Stress obviously is a major factor for many people who suffer from sleep disorders. Learning to manage stress is crucial for these folks. Watch my stress DVD, multiple times, take notes, and apply what you learn. It will help! If you can't manage the situation that is creating your stress then change it. We are coming up on one of the most stressful times of the year for most folks. Please remember what this season is all about and don't get caught up in the "craziness of the season".
Those of you who feel that they need some temporary help with getting to sleep and staying there, you can use some natural supplementation to help. Things like melatonin, and valerian link can be very helpful.
Remember please as we enter into this season that you need to give Thanks for everything, and to give Love out wherever you can. It is all about helping others, and not about us. If you keep that in mind you will avoid the hustle and bustle and stress, that can ruin this time of the year.

What is the 100/0 Principle?
|
I just completed presenting my "Stress and How It's Killing You" seminar for a packed crowd at a local furniture manufacturing company. In the program I spoke about one of the techniques that I use to deal with stress. I have practiced the "Golden Rule" philosophy for years in my life and in my practice. This 100/0 principal is just that, treat people the way you want to be treated, and above all else do it with an open heart, without expecting anything in return. Try it, better yet Do It, you will be surprised at how your life changes.
