30 Tips For You to Use to Get Better Rest

In February I gave you the first 10 of our 30 rules to get you some better sleep. Now let's continue with the next 10 rules that you can incorporate to get more Healthful rest every night. If you missed our first 10 last month you can catch up here.

Rule number 11 is to use low level lighting in the bedroom. Remember the bedroom is designed for just 2 things. Number one is sleep and rest. The other reason that you have a bedroom is so that you and your lover can experience the natural Health promoting benefits of lovemaking. The act of lovemaking benefits your "Move Right" and your "Think Right" as well. Reduced lighting in your bedroom will produce benefits in both of these endeavors. Chiro Corner - continued CCcontd  

You see, The Largest Research Grant Ever was just awarded to my alma mater Palmer College of Chiropractic. That's right, a $7.4 million research grant was just awarded to the Palmer Center for Chiropractic Research (PCCR), the RAND Corporation (a national research think tank which has done other federally funded studies on the effectiveness of Chiropractic care), and the Samueli Institute.

This will be the largest clinical study ever evaluating the efficacy of Chiropractic Care for our military forces. The specific areas of research include: (1) relieving back pain and improving function in active duty service members; (2) evaluating the effects of Chiropractic treatment on the reflexes and reaction times of Special Operations Forces; (3) determining the effects of Chiropractic treatment on strength, balance, and injury prevention for members of the Armed Forces with combat specialties; (4) and assessing the impact of a Chiropractic intervention on "smoking cessation" in military service members.

This study dwarfs the previous study already underway at Palmer, which is examines the effectiveness of a Chiropractic adjustment on reducing blood pressure.

Gang, the fact that this type of research is being performed and funded to this level by the Federal government supports what I have said in every previous lecture and seminarabout current "health conscious and cost conscious" health care arena: only those services which will provide the fastest most cost effective form of care will survive. Fortunately in virtually every study that has been performed to date, Chiropractic care excels in this arena. I know that current and future research will bear this out once again. Let's face it, guys, it doesn't take a "Rocket Scientist" to realize what the Chinese, Greeks, and yes even the "father of modern medicine" Hippocrates himself knew: "Spinal adjustments performed by a skilled professional will allow the body to heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery." Think about it for a moment. Pressure on a nerve as it exits the spine will affect every tissue, cell, and organ to which that particular nerve supplies. This is how an adjustment can positively affect your low back pain as well as your headaches, blood pressure, and bladder or bowel function.

Let's get the egos and bias out of our way and do the most conservative, effective and cost effective form of Health Care (as opposed to Disease and Sickness Care) first. You can always fall back on drugs and surgery if all else fails, but let's at least give it a fair try first. Next Article

Diet Soda - continued sodacontd 

This first study was published in the online journal Diabetes Care. This study found that drinking just one diet soda per day increased the risk for specific components of "Metabolic Syndrome". It would also mean, are you ready for this one; increase your incidence of acquiring Type 2 Diabetes. Hold on there a minute isn't that one of the reasons people who either have or are attempting to avoid this disorder take in so much "DIET" everything, including soda? Well if you believe the "party line" and the "marketing hype" (remember I have told you to watch out for this one in particular!) you bought this one "hook, line, and artificially sweetened sinker".

One of the really interesting findings of two recent studies is the association between consumption of diet soda and the onset of Type 2 Diabetes. These researchers actually found that there was a 67% greater incidence of Type 2 Diabetes. That is truly a staggering figure, especially for those poor souls who actually believe that they are doing something good for themselves by drinking or eating "Diet Food Product" of any type.

Here is another Ah Ha moment relative to Metabolic Syndrome. By drinking "Diet Soda" (major misnomer!) two specific components of Metabolic Syndrome were negatively impacted in the long term (this study was performed from 2002 through 2007). The first was waist circumference. That's right by consuming "diet soda" (Liar!) you will actually gain weight. Specifically around the abdomen! I know, that's where you really want it, right Ladies??? The other interesting thing is that you will increase your fasting blood sugar level. WHAAAAT???? That sounds counterintuitive. I mean the good folks at all of the soda manufacturing companies have told us that if we want to lose weight we need to drink more of their "Diet Food Product" in order to do that. Wait a minute aren't they the people who are "PROFITING" from my increased consumption of this stuff? Now I get it! They make more money, I get fatter, and I also increase my likelihood of acquiring Type 2 Diabetes by 67%!

Now it should all make sense to you. If you want to stay Healthy, Lose and or Not Gain Weight, and do everything you can to avoid acquiring Type 2 Diabetes, then drink what you are supposed to, WATER!!!!!

I will leave you with the parting words from the researchers who conducted this study: "These results corroborate findings from the ARIC (Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities) and the Framingham studies and show stronger adverse associations exist between diet soda and Type 2 Diabetes. Diet soda consumption, either independently or in conjunction with other dietary and lifestyle behaviors, may lead to weight gain, impaired glucose control, and eventually diabetes." Next article

Sleep Right - continued SRcontd 

Replacing your 60 watt bulb with a 45 watt or a 3 way bulb which can be adjusted depending on the time of day would be best. Another parallel tip which I will consider rule number 12 is to use a dimmer. This will allow you to gradually lower the lighting a little at a time. This will cause a gentle and subtle drowsing effect on your eyes and in your mind.

Rule number 13 is to block all secondary light out of the room. If there is a street light that shines in the window even though the curtain is drawn, then try dark, light blocking curtains. If there is light that comes in through a crack in the bottom of the door then shove a towel under the door. You can even use the good old eye mask if necessary to block that secondary light.

Rule number 14 dovetails with numbers 12 and 13. I want you to turn away or block completely all LCD lighting. That means clocks, TV's, DVD and VCR players, stereos, along with cell phones and IPod's. Turn them, cover them or get them out of the room.

Our next rule is to quiet or cover noise that can't be removed. A noise of even 60 decibels will stimulate your nervous system and make it difficult for you to get a restful sleep. Dampening of background noise may be done by using a fan set on a low speed, or an air purifier which will reduce airborne contaminants in the room as well. These two ideas can be used in place of a more expensive "white noise device".

A snoring partner can also create a difficult sleeping environment for the individual on the receiving end of the offending auditory insult. Rule number 16 is that it is alright to use ear plugs or noise blocking head phones if it is really bad. I have recommended for years that a shirt with a breast pocket worn backwards with either a tennis ball or a golf ball in the pocket will keep the "Snuffleupagus" off of his or her back. Since most chronic snorers do their best work while on their backs, this technique will force them to move to their side which will dampen the sound effects.

The color of your sleeping area will even affect your sleep. You should use light pastel colors with few, if any, bright accent colors. These sedating colors will assist with a restful sleep.

Next you need to get the junk out of your bedroom. I mean clean it up! The old adage about clutter applies here not just to your desk. We don't need a cluttered room to give us a cluttered mind when we are trying to relax and go to sleep. So de-clutter that bedroom. Put some nice plants (they help clean and oxegenate the air too) and pictures in that room to stimulate "pleasant dreams".

I think that we are up to rule number 19 if I am not mistaken, and this one is something that I am frequently asked by my patients. You need to replace your mattress "when it is worn". Depending on the quality of the mattress that you use this may be every 10 years or more frequently. The type that you choose is truly a personal preference. You need to go into the show room and give them a test drive, and I don't mean to lay down for a few minutes and say "I think this one feels o.k.". No, give it a real test, and if 2 of you will be sharing the bed you both need to test it at the same time. A couple of tips: first, many mattress retailers have a 30 or 90 day return policy. If you don't like it before the allotted time frame ends you can return it for a replacement. I would also recommend that you wait for a sale if you can. January is the traditional "White Sale" month for bedding. There is a significant mark up on mattresses and you can often buy one at half price if you wait and do some comparison shopping.

I saved a good one for last. Rule number 20 on our hit list of "Sleep Right" ideas involves clothing or perhaps the lack thereof. Your bed clothing should be season appropriate. If you need to be a little bit warmer then it is time for the flannels. Always remember that cotton allows your body to move and "breathe" better. Women, especially those prone to vaginal infections should avoid underwear of any type at night. There are also studies that indicate wearing a bra more than ½ the day interferes with proper lymphatic function. Truly the absolute healthiest way to sleep is in your "birthday suit". This will allow freedom of movement without clothing binding which can cause a number of concerns including blocking blood flow and pinching & binding which interrupt your sleep.

So have some fun with that one gang, and I hope that you were able to apply our top ten rules last month and were able to get some better quality sleep as a result. I also hope that you apply some if not all of these next 10 rules so that you improve that sleep even further.

Eat Right - continued ERcontd
Now that we have that out of the way I bet you are wondering about the relevance of the title of this article. Well I am just getting to that now. You see, in our last Cleanse meeting/class I discussed the latest on "the Infamous C Word", CHOLESTEROL shedding some light on this totally misunderstood substance. You see I, unlike the medical community and their teachers "Big Pharma", have nothing to gain by hiding the truth about cholesterol. I am not marketing the largest selling class of drugs in the U.S., STATINS (cholesterol lowering drugs) and generating an estimated 20 BILLION dollars in revenue from this one class of drugs. No, I am just attempting to do my part to help to teach the realities of what you can do to decrease your cholesterol to a "naturally right" level without putting "toxic drugs" into your system. So let's get to the realities of "cholesterol without the unnecessary hype. First, cholesterol is not "BAD". On the contrary; cholesterol is a necessary prerequisite in order for many other substances to be manufactured in your body. As Matt Ridley stated in his book "Genome", cholesterol is "a word pregnant with danger." It is labeled as the "cause of heart disease. You are educated by your "friends" in the "pharmaceutical media" to believe that if you eat it you will die, when in fact nothing could be further from the truth.

You see cholesterol is actually an "ESSENTIAL NUTRIENT" for your body!!! It is actually a small organic particle which is not soluble in water, but it is soluble in fat. Now get ready for this one and remember it because we will talk about it in a minute. You see cholesterol is manufactured from something which is toxic - SUGAR! Yes sugar. Now understand you do get some cholesterol from saturated fat, but sugar is the real culprit here. Here is another eye opener for you; You Would Not be able to Live Without Cholesterol.

So, what is cholesterol used for you might be asking? It is used to manufacture hormones for one thing. Sex hormones like progesterone, and estrogen, as well as adrenal hormones (stress hormones) like cortisol, and aldosterone. It is also used to manufacture Vitamin D. As a matter of fact without Cholesterol you can not manufacture Vitamin D. Now I want you to think about this for a minute; we all are virtually deficient in vitamin D. Do you think that perhaps that could be due to the fact that we are driving our cholesterol levels to "ridiculously low levels", combined with the fact that we are afraid of the sun's rays? Oh yes, I forgot to tell you that the other essential nutrient besides Cholesterol required to manufacture Vitamin D in your body are the healing and life generating rays of U.V. light from the sun. Here is another Ah-Ha for you; Vitamin D is actually a hormone. It is categorized as a vitamin, but I believe if it were to be newly discovered today it would be categorized as a Hormone rather than a Vitamin.

So let's get a few things straight about cholesterol. First, it is not the dangerous demon that the mainstream media and the medical community would have you believe. Second, it is made from sugar. Third, it is a necessary substance found in every human on the face of the planet. Without it you would DIE! You would not be capable of manufacturing essential hormones for proper sexual function, proper stress management, and you also wouldn't be able to manufacture the essential hormone which we call vitamin D. In other words Cholesterol is a necessary component for maintaining Health and Wellness.

WARNING - the medical community, along with the prodding/help of Big Pharma, is attempting to drive your cholesterol levels to of Extreme Deficiency! The new norm for them is 100 on your blood test. The old norm was 200. Why, you might ask? Well because they mistakenly believe that this will keep you from developing heart disease and will reduce your mortality rate from cardiovascular disease. Nothing could be further from the truth. As a matter of fact I will state emphatically right now that 10 to 20 years from now (it takes the establishment a long time to catch up) it will be realized by the "establishment" that this was the wrong way to be moving and they will attempt to reverse the damage that they have done, in a very clumsy and awkward way. Much akin to the food pyramid which they have attempted to fix by admitting that basing our food guidelines on a foundation of "Inflammatory Grains" was wrong. The problem is that the damage is done and attempting to reverse 30 to 40 years of the wrong lifestyle is like attempting to turn a supertanker around like a Smart Car, it just doesn't happen. So heed my warning now. Begin to Eat Right, Think Right, Move Right, and Sleep Rightnow and you will be Healthier. Sorry to those of our Silver Inner Health Circle members who were hoping that they could take part in the Cleanse in the winter. We will just be holding our Cleanse classes in the spring and fall in 2012. This is primarily due to the fact that Dr. Pfeiffer only has so many hours in a day, and between my practices, research and study, writing, and family obligations I have to watch how thin I can spread myself.

In this study test mice were fed diets consisting of identical diets except for one component. One group was fed diets rich on good Health inducing Omega 3 fats, and the other group was fed just saturated fats. The findings of this study were not surprising to me and they should not be to you either. The group fed the Omega 3's had reduced whole body inflammation, less body weight gain, blood sugar levels, and reduced cholesterol levels.

I know that I am preaching to the choir, but reinforcement is always a good thing, especially for those of you who tend to become complacent and fall off the proverbial wagon occasionally. For those of you who did fall off, I am holding my hand out to you. Grab a hold and I will pull you back on board.
