It's the Journey Not the Destination!

It is all about the "Journey", as I have said before to you. You see we are all on a journey in life, and all too often we get ourselves

wrapped up in the end point the "Destination", and we miss the beauty of the "Journey". Read entire article

I want you ALL, men and women to watch this brief tribute to women. I have to admit that "I Love Women". While I will admit I have never enveyed them for some of what they have to put up with like US (guys), their monthly "Friend", (I have to say I for the life of me I could never understand where that name came from), bearing children and giving their lives and desires up for their children, not to mention the fact that women are generally the only thing that keeps us guys from being "Slobs" for our entire lives. Read entire article

nuclearAvoiding Thyroid Cancer

Recently my colleague Dr. Oz had a segment about the fastest growing form of cancer in women; Thyroid Cancer. The focus of the segment was on medical x-rays. This includes mammograms and dental x-rays in particular. These two forms of diagnostic radiology were targeted due to the relatively high "dose" of radiation that is used, and the focus or target for the radiation which is at or around the thyroid gland.  Read entire article and Send to a friend

Institute for Responsible Technology: Call for Action

O.K. the FDA approved GMO alfalfa, which will be fed to farm animals and then make it into our bodies indirectly. So we will be eating GMO food and not even know it. We should at least be able to know if we are eating GMO fed foods, since we will be subject to the consequences of consuming GMO's with out doing so directly. So, click here and complete the form at the bottom to send a letter off stating your concerns over this new ruling by the FDA, and let's see if we can still fight this battle to keep our food as pure as possible. This is important! Send to a friend

Think Right - continued TRcontd

I remember as a kid, I had an uncle who always talked about how great life would be when he retired. I know that he said this virtually every time that I saw him, since it left such a lasting impression on me as a young boy. At any rate he did finally retire, and the irony is that within 6 months he was diagnosed with brain cancer and he "transitioned" shortly after that. I know this is supposed to be a "Think Right" segment, and this probably doesn't sound much like a way to support your "Think Right" pillar. Well as I learned years ago "in every situation there is a lesson". My uncle left me with a wonderful lesson which I have attempted to apply ever since. You see "he forgot to enjoy the journey". We all can be found guilty of this one at times, we think about the weekend, or the vacation, or even Friday. Many will say; "if I can just make it to Friday". The unfortunate thing is that they forget to enjoy the "Journey". The day to day things that often pass unnoticed. Like the 'thank you" that you gave to the waitress that made her feel appreciated after a long shift during which she had to race around serving patron after patron who made her feel unappreciated because all they did was make demands on her. Perhaps it was your son or daughter who enjoyed so much the time you spent together on the ride to school, during which you were worried that you were not going to get all of the things done that you had on your "to do list".

You see as humans we often get lost in the "muddle of life", and forget what is truly important. We forget that the "Journey" is what life is all about. Once we all arrive at the "Ultimate Destination" it is a little late to look back at the "Journey". The "Journey" must be enjoyed each and every second of each and every day, because it is truly what makes "Life Worth Living", it is all about the "Journey". Go out and enjoy yours, but before you do, enjoy this little video segment above which I hope will drive this point home for you.  Next Article

Tribute to Women - continuedtribute

These are just a few brief examples of the attributes of these wonderful, wonderful individuals. When I look back on many of the Great contributions that have been made over the years I see leadership, strength and commitment in the women that I have studied. Women like Helen Keller. I think that if she had been a man he would have said "the heck with all of this nonsense I am going to keep grunting , and stealing food off of everyone's plate". Don't forget Ann Sullivan, Helen's teacher who had the strength, passion, and knowledge to keep on, keeping on in spite of the difficulties that she ran into with the job of teaching a deaf, blind, mute little girl to speak, and communicate. Look at Abigail Adams, a woman of Great strength, who supported her husband in all of his endeavors. There was also Dolly Madison, who not only single-handedly created the position of the First Lady, but also fled the White House with her family when the British attacked and burned it to the ground. My list can go on and on with more examples like Madam Curie, and Margaret Thatcher.

The point is that we need to understand a few absolutes. First without women the population shrinks, the economy stops, we men become Neanderthals again, and life in general is no longer any fun, challenging, or interesting. So lets all take a moment and watch the video clip, and get our "Think Right" in order regarding our relationship with each other.

Cancer Corner - continued ERcontd

Let's look at the location of the thyroid first. This butterfly-shaped gland is located at the base of your neck in the front. It therefore is receiving either direct or "scatter" radiation when you have a mammogram, and obviously receives direct and indirect radiation when you have dental x-rays.

The thyroid is a gland, meaning that it secretes or produces hormones for the body. It is under the control of another gland located in the brain called the "pituitary gland". The "thyroid" controls many body functions such as heart rate, weight, and overall metabolic body functions.

We are focusing here on two forms of diagnostic radiology, specifically dental x-rays and mammograms.  My intent is not to get into the mammogram controversy. I will leave that for another article. Just suffice it to say that there are better, much less dangerous alternatives to the x-rays used in a mammogram. I will predict that in the future you will see greater acceptance of the use of MRI studies to diagnose breast disorders. Perhaps not as a first level test but definitely as a follow up. I make this prediction because it is much more definitive diagnostically, and has a much lower false positive and false negative rate from what the research is showing right now.

As far as dental x-rays go the concern here is the dose of radiation that must be used. You see with a normal diagnostic x-ray such as a chest x-ray, a lower "dose" of radiation can be used since in the x-ray film holder or "cassette" there are "screens" which contain "enhancers" or "magnifiers", so to speak, which will "magnify" the x-rays after they have penetrated through you. This allows for a lower dose of radiation to be used to penetrate the patient. This technology has not been used in the same way in dental x-rays and therefore the dose of radiation must be greater in order to penetrate the body part, in this case the jaw and teeth.

"Ionizing radiation" or x-ray, causes mutation of tissue when the dose is high enough and used over a long enough period. Therefore the most important thing that must be done is to limit the "body exposure" to the area of concern and to protect all other regions of the body to the best of our ability. So, how do we do this? Well it can be accomplished by using a simple element which x-rays cannot penetrate, LEAD!

When you have your dental x-rays performed you will notice two things, first you will be draped with a very heavy apron. It is heavy because it contains lead. The second thing that you will notice is that the technician taking the x-ray will scoot out of the room quickly before he or she takes the x-ray. That is because the technician is hiding behind a lead wall or screen before shooting the x-ray. One thing that you will notice though about that lead apron is that it generally does not cover your neck. That is where your thyroid gland is located. There are two ways that you can cover the thyroid and gain more protection for this delicate gland. That is to request what is called a "thyroid guard", which is just an extension of the lead apron which extends up over your neck, and protects not only the thyroid gland but also all of the other tissue in that area. If this is unavailable you can simply ask the technician to pull the apron up over your neck. This will do the same thing. If you do this though you want to make sure that the apron is long enough to also cover your gonads (your crotch).

You must also make the identical request when you are having a mammogram. You will be surprised when the technician obliges you by going to a drawer and pulling out and dusting off the little used "thyroid guard".

The thing that I want all our Silver Inner Health Circletmmembers to remember about this procedure is that at first you may feel awkward making this request, but it is your body that you are protecting. The technician is safely hiding behind that lead wall.

I want to thank Silver Inner Health Circletm member Beth R. for the heads-up on this article. I truly appreciate it when our members submit studies, questions, or research articles for my review and comment, since this is of great benefit to us all.
